CE Requirements Changes Due to COVID-19

In recognition of the difficulty licensees are experiencing obtaining live CE due to COVID-19, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has extended its temporary waiver of the requirement that at least 42 hours of the CE credits completed for relicensure be from live, interactive courses.

Dentists whose licenses are due for renewal between March 1, 2020 and January 1, 2022 may complete up to 100% of their mandated CE hours as self-study courses. All self-study courses must be offered by an approved NYSED provider and must be in subject areas related to the practice of dentistry. Additionally, the Department will grant an adjustment to all licensees, regardless of registration renewal date, to utilize self-study for any coursework taken during the period from March 1, 2020 – January 1, 2022, provided that it is taken from a Department-approved provider and is in an acceptable subject area for dentistry. Coursework taken outside that timeframe must meet the continuing education requirements in dentistry’s laws and regulations.
