Mandatory Electronic Prescribing Effective March 27, 2016

January 4, 2016

Effective March 27, 2016, practitioners in New York State are required to electronically prescribe all medication.

Back in the early summer of 2015, a very large coalition of healthcare provider associations, including your New York State Dental Association (NYSDA), were successful in obtaining legislative relief that delayed the implementation of the mandatory electronic prescribing law in New York State. But we all knew the hard-earned victory was only a temporary stay of a mandate which requires all licensed healthcare providers to prescribe medications for patients by electronic means only. The delay was necessary to assure all safeguards and procedures would be in place.

On March 27, 2016 that delay expires. Time to pay the piper!

Over the last 12 months, Second District has been preparing its membership for the inevitability of the mandate. We have provided numerous ePrescribe seminars, all at no cost to our members. We offered a rebate for the purchase of the NYSDA-endorsed ePrescribe software solutions through Henry Schein. And while many took advantage of this offer and secured the software program, many others did not. The time for delaying on enrolling and using this software is over. You can be sure that things will become more difficult as March 27 approaches.

That is why your Board of Trustees implores you to become proactive and enroll now! Use it now. There is always a learning curve when using new technology and ePrescribing is no different. The more proficient you become at writing electronic prescriptions before the deadline, the better off you and your patients will be when the law becomes effective on March 27. Now is the time to take action.

Now is the time to order and implement the software. Do not wait until the last minute. Avoid the stress. Please call Henry Schein at (800) 734-5561, option 2 (M-F, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. EST) to sign-up for the NYSDA-endorsed ePrescribe software solution to ensure that you can meet this requirement.
