The Second District Dental Society is the local component of the New York State Dental Association and the American Dental Association representing 1,400 member dentists in Brooklyn and Staten Island. It is our hope that this website provides our members with information that will aid them in making the most out of their membership. This lecture will cover the identification, diagnosis and treatment of odontogenic infections. It will cover primary and secondary fascial spaces and will discuss surgical management, including operating room protocol and extra-oral drainage. Antibiotics will also be discussed. Upon successful completion of this lecture, attendees will: 

  • Learn how to identify and diagnose dental abscesses and space infections.
  • Know when to refer patients to an oral surgeon or send to the emergency room.
  • Know how to treat infections with incision and drainage.
  • Understand the surgical management of abscesses beyond the vestibule.

MARK GOODENOUGH, D.D.S., M.D. was raised on Long Island, New York, where he attended Stony Brook University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry with honors. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, serving as the class vice president. Subsequently, he completed an integrated six-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County where, in addition to his oral surgery certificate, he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine. During this time, he received rigorous training in dentoalveolar surgery, facial trauma, internal medicine and surgical intensive care. Dr. Goodenough also completed a one-year internship in general surgery, where he gained experience in managing medically complex and critically ill patients. In his final year of residency, he served as chief resident and was selected for the Resident of the Year award in the Department of Dental and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, an award which recognizes outstanding dedication, service and professional excellence. Dr. Goodenough is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

On November 14, 2024, the following members were elected at the November Membership Meeting at the Dyker Beach Golf Course for elective positions beginning January 1, 2025. The 2024 President Elect, Dr. Paul Teplitsky, will become the President of the Second District Dental Society effective January 1, 2025 succeeding the 2024 President, Dr. Tricia Quartey-Sagaille.
